A celebration of Instruct-ERIC: achievements, impact and expanding ambitions

On 16 September 2020, a virtual event was held to celebrate the achievements of Instruct-ERIC in the time since achieving European Research Infrastructure Consortium (ERIC) status in 2017.

During an afternoon of selected talks, the Instruct-ULTRA-funded event celebrated the achievements of Instruct-ERIC, recognising the hard work and commitment of the consortium, staff, supporters and users, in the wider context of the successful European Research Infrastructure landscape. The event brought together Instruct’s key stakeholders, including centre staff, policy makers, and leading scientists from the EU and beyond.

The event was expertly chaired by Professor Joel Sussman, co-director of the Structural Proteomic Centre in Israel and Professor of Structural Biology at the Weizmann Institute of Science.

Highlights from the event included an insightful talk from Roberta Zobbi, Deputy Head of Research and Industrial Infrastructures Unit at the European Commission, on the vision for Research Infrastructures in Europe. This was followed by a talk from Instruct Director, Professor David Stuart’s, highlighting the achievements of Instruct-ERIC.

Further talks were given on open access and data sharing, collaborations between Research Infrastructures, the impact of Instruct-ERIC on Horizon Europe missions, and positioning Instruct-ERIC as a scientific influencer. Following the talks, a panel Q&A session provided participants with an opportunity to ask their questions to key representatives involved with European Research Infrastructures.

Certainly, the event revealed an exciting future ahead for Instruct-ERIC and Research Infrastructures in Europe, with many new collaborative opportunities that will enable important scientific and technological developments in the years to come.
