The 6th International Symposium on Diffraction Structural Biology (ISDSB2019) is an international symposium organised by the Japan Society for the Promotion of Science, University-Industry Research Cooperative Research Committee, 169th Committee on Structural Biology using Diffraction Techniques.

The symposium is positioned as an interface between academic researchers and industry researchers, as well as an interface between diffraction techniques and other related techniques in the field of structural biology. Symposium topics will include macromolecular crystallography, Cryo-EM, software and databases and drug discovery.

The keyword “Diffraction Structural Biology” was proposed by the 169 Committee and has shown to the world the importance of research on structural biology mainly by X-ray, neutron, electron and other diffraction techniques. In 2003 the International Symposium on Diffraction Structural Biology 2003 (ISDSB 2003) was held in Tsukuba hosted by the 169 Committee. Researchers from both domestic and overseas recognized that “This is a unique and valuable international symposium of small but covers various methods and methodologies for structural biology. The International Advisory Committee (IAC) of ISDSB2003 strongly suggested that the meeting would be held not only in Japan but also in the other countries to be more international. In the 2nd international symposium (ISDSB2007) held in Tokyo in 2010, the IAC proposed to hold the 3rd ISDSB would be held outside of Japan, and ISDSB2010 was held in Paris in 2010 co-organized with the local committee. The 4th ISDSB (ISDSB2013) was held in Nagoya in 2013 and the 5th ISDSB (ISDSB2016) was held in Knockville, Tennessee, USA.

Structural biology has been developed in order to clarify the mechanism of action of molecular machines responsible for life phenomena through its three-dimensional structure of biological macromolecules. In order to recognize the specificity found in biological macromolecules, which are essential for life, related to disease and drug discovery, it is also necessary to extend to other related techniques to the diffraction method. In recent years, X-ray free electron laser facility SACLA and powerful pulse neutron facility J-PARC have been in operation in Japan, and similar facilities are being constructed all over the world. Also, the results of structural analysis by electron microscopy have also increased dramatically, as the Nobel Prize for Chemistry was awarded to the cryo-electron microscope in 2017. The role of this symposium plays an important role based on the era, and in addition to structural analysis based on diffraction phenomena as a core technology, other scattering, tomography, imaging, dynamics, computational science etc.

The symposium gathers the highest level of researchers, who works in the structural biology not only based on diffraction technique as a core technology, but also based on the other scattering, tomography, imaging, dynamics, spectroscopy, computational science etc., to discuss on various problems related to a wide range of fields from understanding of life phenomena to application to medicine, drug discovery, and industry.
